Buildings of Maarsbergen Estate

Logo

You will recognize the monumental buildings of Maarsbergen Estate in these fences. The Historic Countryside Maarsbergen has been designated as a National Monument in its entirety, both the buildings and the greenery. The country estate tells the story of centuries of living and working in this place. The monuments are tangible reminders of the past. They are maintained in a timely and professional manner and are preserved for the future. Maintaining and preserving the monuments has an important place in day-to-day management. On average once every two years, the ‘Monumentenwacht’ inspects the built monuments and makes a proposal for the maintenance to be carried out. The reports are stimulating us. Maintenance is carried out as much as possible by our own employees. Preserving the monuments is preserving the future.

Carriage house

The carriage house was built when the Godin de Beaufort family bought Maarsbergen in 1882. In the winters, the family lived in the city, Utrecht, and in the summer they lived in Maarsbergen. Every spring they came to Maarsbergen by carriage. The family had a small ecurie, ‘stable’. A hunting wagon, a carriage for Mr., one carriage for Mrs., a shopping wagon and a two-person carriage with which Jan Willem Godin de Beaufort went to work in Amersfoort.

Tollhouse

The Tollhouse is located on the central axis of the estate. It was built around 1848 and was used by the toll collector until 1923. Before the turn in the Woudenbergseweg was built, all traffic between Maarsbergen and Leersum passed the Tollhouse. Passers-by had to pay money for the maintenance of the road. The current resident is the forester of the estate who can keep a close eye on everything from his home.

Stables

In the stable were the workhorses located. They worked on the fields and in the forest. The stable was renovated in the 1990s. Four stables were made, with a washing area and solarium. Here are Willemina’s competition horses: Ekino (Ed), Lancelot (Freek) and Legende (Leo). The fourth stable is currently occupied by donkey Lies. But after the summer, Nicolai (Niek) will return from England and Lies have to give up her spacious place again.

The offices

The current office is the former work carpenter & pig shed and smokehouse. In the time that the estate was self-sufficient, pigs were kept for own consumption. After the pigs were slaughtered, the meat was smoked to keep it for a long time. In addition, the barn was the workplace for the employees of the estate, as we now have the current work barn. It was built in 2001 and is next to it.
